Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, is the one quoted saying “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".
Psychoanalysis, believing in the deep unconscious mind, theorized that a lot of hidden desires, especially forbidden ones, comes out in a hidden disguise so our fragile ego and super moral super ego won’t go ape shit.
Thus psycholanalysts theorizes there are alot of hidden symbolic meaning in seemingly innocent behaviours, in dreams etc.
Dreaming going through a tunnel on a train, unlike a Chinese fortune teller telling you someone is going to die, was you dreaming about having sex (well, it could be anyway). A cave/room can be a vagina, a pen/cigar can be a penis
Allegedly, Freud was approched by a student of his asking him about what Freud’ constant cigar smoking signified. Freud gave out the famous response, " Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar", thus the current usage of, don’t look too deep, sometimes we have to take things at face value.
Freud smoked 20 cigar a day most of his adult life even though it gave him cancer and 30 operations, he never gave it up. Being such a highly self disciplined man, one has to wonder if cigar was really just a cigar.
